Â
Reminder – members are invited to sign up for the free Safety Management training courses taking place this month in Victoria. (See attached for exact dates and outline of training). As many of you may know Safety Management Training and COR Auditor Training provides companies with essential skills for managing and improving their safety processes and safety culture in an effort to reduce injuries within BC’s construction industry.
Also, if you aren’t already COR certified this is a great opportunity for companies to get COR certified and get a rebate on their WorkSafeBC premiums. By putting an employee through the Auditor Training now this will give companies enough time to submit their audit and qualify for a rebate this coming year. 248 companies certified in COR last year for a total of $3.2 million in rebates. To register or for more info contact:

News from your Fellow Member…
Gillingham Cabinets has Cut its "carbon footprint" in Half. It is the first major kitchen cabinet manufacturer on Vancouver Island to measure its greenhouse gas emissions, and on top of that – to implement a plan to eliminate more than half of them.
Â
At the beginning of 2009, Gillingham Cabinets started using “low VOC” wood – standard in all cabinets. Low VOC wood has much lower “off-gassing” of VOCs (volatile organic compounds). They then looked into what recycling options this made possible.
It may seem simple enough to start a recycling program, but recycling the volume of scrap left over from building lots of cabinets every day isn’t quite as easy as putting out paper & plastic at the curb. It is with great relief that they recycle this material now, because over 80% of their waste was organic matter that would decompose into methane - a very potent greenhouse gas. The result is that by making this change to the business, they were able to have such a big impact on their carbon footprint.
Gillingham Cabinets showroom in Nanaimo is on Mostar Road, and their manufacturing facility is in Duncan. They have resellers in Courtenay and Victoria. More information on their website at www.gillinghamcabinets.com

Train Station Restoration Update
The response for expressions of interest has been very strong and we look forward to tendering the project in mid March. It has been so good in fact, that we are unable to keep up with the telephone messages. Please communicate via e-mail as much a possible to ensure we are able to address all of your questions (

).
Â
There have been a number of interested parties requesting more information on what form their expression of interest should take. To help, please find attached a draft version of the CCDC 11 for reference. Interested parties are welcome to use a valid copy of the CCDC 11 OR summarize the information requested on the CCDC 11 in a letter. We do not need to have an exhaustive list of your experience, but there should be adequate information to prove your relevant experience.
Â
All interested parties must submit a written expression of interest that outlines their relevant experience. It is important that this expressions of interest be more in depth than a simple e-mail or telephone call as the information presented will be the basis for the pre-qualification process. To maintain a fair process, we will be unable to pre-qualify any trade that has not submitted a written expression of interest. Thank you. (See attachments for details)
